Gwen

Gwen was sadly living in a factory farm in Georgia. She was being used as a breeder bird for cornish cross chickens who are used in the industrial meat industry. When a tornado struck the factory, thousands of individual chickens were left alive but slated to be bulldozed with the rest of the remaining rubble. Luckily rescuers were allowed on site and saved hundreds of surviving hens. When Gwen arrived at the Refuge she was filthy and suffering from severe bumblefoot, a condition commonly seen in these birds due to their large size and unsanitary living conditions. When she was finally healed and released into our chicken house, she experienced the outdoors - the grass, the dirt, the sun - for the first time in her life. She now enjoys many adventures in the woods and pastures with her flockmates.
