Grow To Life

We are excited to welcome Grow to Life to the Refuge for the first time. Their mission is Grow, Give and Educate wherein their vision is “the community serving the community.”

They offer complimentary classes in agriculture, nutrition education and art to citizens of the Chapel Hill/Carrboro/Durham area and have been working to combat food insecurities since 2014 by offering complimentary food distributions.

We will be joined by Founder & Executive Director, Makeda Ma’at who will be introducing Refuge supporters to her incredible organization!

Sliding Scale Tickets

In an effort to make our events more accessible, we are offering sliding scale tickets for our Tour & Explore. Previously, our Tour tickets have been $15 per person. This month, we are offering tickets that range from free to $40 per person. All tour proceeds help the Refuge provide lifelong care to rescued farm animals.

When you accurately assess how much you are able to pay, you are taking part in the work of justice, liberation and accessibility. It is equally important to us that folks who can pay more do so, as it is people for whom cost is a barrier to select a ticket price that aligns with their current budget.

Q&A

Can I purchase tickets when I arrive?

No, please purchase your tickets in advance – a limited number of spaces are available for each date.

How do I get there and where can I park?

Please park in our new Pavilion entrance and forest parking lot. Use 7432 NC-87N, Pittsboro, NC 27312 for GPS, and pull into large gravel road next to the mailbox at 7432 (there you will see a purple ‘PARKING’ sign).

 Can I bring animal treats?

We will provide safe treats for you to offer to select animals. Please do not bring any food from home.

What should I bring?

During the tour there can be lots of mud, so rubber boots or hiking boots are highly encouraged throughout the year. Remember to bring a water bottle, but please no food. Bring your camera – visitors are encouraged to take photographs throughout the tour and share them on social media!

Is this experience good for kids?

Absolutely! Kids of all ages will enjoy walking the grounds and meeting the animal residents.

Do I need to purchase a ticket for my child?

Yes, children ages 2 and up require a ticket. Those younger than 2 are invited free of charge!

Can I bring my dog on the tour?

No, companion animals of any kind are not permitted on the grounds for safety purposes. We also do not allow companion animals to be left in vehicles. Please leave your pup at home.

If it rains will the tour be rescheduled?

We hold our tours rain or shine! Please come dressed appropriately for being outdoors and check the forecast before you leave home. If dangerous weather conditions develop, such as lightning, we will reschedule the tour with an option for you to be reimbursed.

How can I become more involved with the Refuge?

We are happily accepting volunteers to help with animal care, cleaning, socializing and other important duties! Learn more about volunteering opportunities: http://piedmontrefuge.org/membership/volunteer/

I want to bring a donation – what does the Refuge need?

The Refuge is always in need of monetary donations. You can give a donation via check, cash, or card at our check in/gift shop area. Other items that we always need include paper towels, toilet paper, non-latex disposable gloves, raisins, fresh kale, and any Mrs. Meyers brand cleaning products.

What is the accessibility of the Refuge?

Our tours take place on gravel roads, grass pasture, and other terrains, all of which may not be completely wheelchair friendly. We do, however, have a golf cart that allows for transport around our grounds. Additionally, masks are currently not required outside, but we do ask that you bring one to wear indoors when visiting our restroom. Because of the size of our property, social distancing of 6 feet or more will always be possible. If you have any accessibility needs, we invite you to email us at info@piedmontrefuge.org to make arrangements before visiting.

Please email us at info@piedmontrefuge.org or call us at 919-533-4013 if you have any additional questions!
